Town Fountain

back to overview

The Town Fountain, or rather the modern monument with St Magnus, which today reminds us of the fountain in the middle of this small square, was once the heart of the town. At a time when there were no water pipes, it was here that the women fetched water for their domestic chores. For cooking, for example – not so much for washing, certainly if we think of the Middle Ages. People used to meet here to exchange the latest news and to find out what the powers that be had thought up in the way of new taxes and levies for their subjects. Or to hear what was happening in the world outside.
